Archbishop Coleman F. Carroll created Saint Justin Martyr parish in 1970 and assigned Father Edmond F. Whyte as the founding pastor to serve the needs of Catholics in Upper Keys and Keys Largo. Weekend Masses were celebrated at the Key Largo Civic Club before scheduling confl icts prompted parishioners to fi nd their own spiritual home. They created a facility dedicated in 1973 with offi ces and living accommodations.

The dream of a permanent church prevailed, nurtured by Father Jan Januszewski, the Polish born pastor who had survived a German concentration camp before being liberated by the American Third Army in 1945. Appointed pastor in 1974, Father Jan began the process of building a new church, but died before seeing the dream realized.

A new church was dedicated in 1992.
