East Dade Deanery -

Founded in 1896

History

Although a small group of Catholic farmers, merchants, yachtsmen, railroaders and builders founded the Holy Name of Jesus (GESU) Catholic Church in Miami in 1896, a continuous Catholic presence in this area can be traced back to 1565 when Spanish colonists blessed a mission as Nombre de Dios, and shared a great feast with the Natives, one of the first acts of community thanksgiving in North America.

Throughout its 110 year history GESU’s parishioners established a school, built nine “daughter” parishes within 20 years, founded Catholic Charities in response to a 1931 hurricane, founded a mission for African American Catholics, and conducted special Masses honoring airline employees, lawyers, doctors, police officers, fire fighters, and labor unions. It served as the headquarters for the secret Pedro Pan operation to bring 14,000 unaccompanied children out of Cuba and later joined 10 Downtown/ Overtown churches and synagogues to organize the interfaith and multicultural coalition, Faith in the City.

Urban blight sent many parishioners to the suburbs, but a recent downtown revitalization has brought pricy condos and residents back and a resurgence to the oldest Catholic church in Miami.
