The last stop on the on Old Federal Highway from Miami is Homestead, where Catholics celebrated the first Mass in 1915 at the home of Mrs. Charles Hammond. She had arranged for a priest from Gesu in Miami to visit and also distributed cards listing the dates when Mass would be celebrated at her residence.

Saint Louis Benevolent and Educational Association of Tampa purchased the original Sacred Heart property in 1915 and that same year the Extension Magazine Company of Chicago sent $1500 to build a church on the site where the parish hall now stands. Church construction began 1917 with donated materials, including the altar, and parishioners built the pews. The structure served as a church for sixteen years and as a rectory for twenty. The parish opened a school, staffed by three Sisters of Saint Francis from Allegany, New York in 1954.

The parish established an outreach center for migrant workers; the center offers help with immigration, counseling, religious education, health care concerns, and food. Parishioners regularly feed the homeless, visit elderly and shut-ins, and serve the needy.
