MIAMI The boys of Belen Jesuit and girls of Carrollton School have both won team state championships in cross country this year.

During a meet held at the Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City, Belen won the Class 3A boys division, scoring 26 points to finish ahead of Bartram Trails 112 points. (In cross country, fewer points mean faster times, and the lowest score wins.) Senior Elliot Clemente from Belen won the individual state title, covering the 5K course in 15:05.99 the fastest time in the state.

Carrollton School won the Class 2A girls division, scoring 103 points to finish ahead of The Bolles Schools 130 points.

On Nov. 27, Belen also won the Nike Cross National Southeast Regional Championship, held in Cary, N.C. Elliot Clemente won the race individually with a time of 14:58.

"Belen competed under the name Miami Magis because the Florida High School Athletic Association prohibits schools from competing past the state championship under the school name," explained Victor Arrieta, assistant to Belen's athletic director.

On Dec. 3, Belen will be competing in the national championship in Portland, Ore., under the name Miami-Havana.
