¡Wow!

¿Qué más se puede decir después de visitar la residencia del embajador de los Estados Unidos al Vaticano, conocer a su familia, tomarse fotos con él y el arzobispo Thomas Wenski, y recorrer el patio mientras se disfrutan cocteles y entremeses?

El embajador Miguel Díaz, quien se describe a sí mismo como “un niño de Miami”, brindó por nuestro grupo después de saludar y tomarse fotos pacientemente con cada uno de los 250 peregrinos que llegaron aquí, a Roma.

Expresó que el ambiente multicultural y multilingüe que experimentó al crecer y estudiar en el sur de la Florida – se graduó de la Universidad de St. Thomas y pasó un año en el colegio seminario de St. John Vianney – le había preparado para su actual responsabilidad como diplomático. (Él es un teólogo.)

Explicó que el apoyo “a la dignidad humana y los derechos humanos inalienables, son los hilos evidentes que enhebran los 27 años de relaciones entre los Estados Unidos y la Santa Sede”.

Enfatizó “la importancia de la religión en un mundo que se ve cada vez más fragmentado”, y añadió que “es de vital importancia aprovechar el liderazgo moral de la gente de fe para hacer el bien”.

En sus comentarios, el arzobispo Wenski estuvo de acuerdo con que las relaciones diplomáticas con el Vaticano son “de mutuo beneficio” porque ofrece a los EE. UU. “un poderoso escucha para el mundo”.

La recepción en la residencia del embajador fue sólo el inicio de lo que el arzobispo Wenski describió como “una semana repleta de emociones” para él. También fue muy especial para el resto de nosotros. A todos los arzobispos recién nombrados de los E.E.U.U. se les ofrece una recepción en la residencia del embajador cuando vienen a Roma para recibir el palio. Los arzobispos y peregrinos de Milwaukee, Wisconsin, y de Cincinnati, Ohio, también serán recibidos por el embajador más adelante esta semana.

“Por lo general, las hace todas a la vez”, explicó Julieta Valls Noyes, directora ejecutiva de misión para la embajada de los EE. UU. en la Santa Sede. “Pero esta es especial, porque Miami es especial”.

Ana, your photographs bring back to me very good memories of Rome and all its treasures. But of course, having a special welcome from the US ambassador to the Vatican is not the usual treat. I am glad for you and your family and for us readers who benefit from your experience. We will talk in person when you come back!

I thank Ana Rodriguez Soto to describe for us the experience of being in Rome for such an honorable occassion for our Archbishop Thomas Wenski. For health reasons we were not able to join you all in Rome, yet Ana let's us enjoy the experience.

Ditto on what Richard AND Katherine are saying as well as the fact that, indeed, Miami is special, and very much so, especially in recalling my first time stepping foot here many years ago believing this to just be a "temporarily passing through" to embrace an opportunity to move up the ladder and gain and claim experience in what my corporate Headquarters at the time called 'a showcase market' due to that diversity ... praise God, He had other and far better plans... and years later, after returning for the second time for a much different purpose, the rest is history.... Yes, Miami is special. :)

And the words of Ambassador Miguel Diaz resound deeply: "the importance of religion in a world that appears more and more fragmented" - "It is vitally important to harness the moral leadership of people of faith to do good." Truly powerful words worth reflecting upon.
