MIAMI | Flags were flying Oct. 19 as middle school age students representing seven Miami-Dade private schools competed at the 21st Annual Academic Olympics held at Archbishop Curley Notre Dame 6 to 12 Prep.

Fast action rounds kept students engaged and excited as they competed for top spots in the categories of language, religion, science and social studies. Students work together in a team, and the team captain must quickly raise a flag so that his/her team is the first to buzz-in their answer, "Jeapordy" style.

Schools that participated were: St. Rose of Lima, St. John the Apostle, the Cushman School, St. Mary Cathedral, Brother Rice Honors Academy, St. James, and St. Kevin.

The 2013 winners were St. Rose and St. James, representing the large and small school categories respectively.

Students enjoy this academic event because it allows them to compete and work together as a team, unlike competitions where students are individually examined.
