Enjoy the art in the parish named for the saint known as the 'Hammer of the Heretics'
The four evangelists -- Matthew as a man, Mark as a lion, Luke as an ox, John as an eagle -- are represented in this stained-glass window in a stairwell at St. Anthony School.
Statue of Anthony, in the lobby of St. Anthony School, has him in a typical pose holding the Christ Child and lilies. One story says that the infant Jesus appeared to Anthony just before the saint died.A scroll echoes the Torah, the first five books of the Bible and the central scripture of Judaism. The lamp stands for wisdom, piety and intelligence.
The cross in a chalice symbolizes the blood of Christ.
Pierced heart recalls the prediction of Simeon to Mary that "a sword will pierce your heart." The lilies stand for purity, innocence and immortality.
The crown is an emblem of victory, royalty and honor. But the five stars stand for the wounds in Jesus' body: in his hands, his feet and his side.
Butterfly stands for resurrection, metamorphosis and eternal life.
The sun -- a life-giving force and symbol of Christ -- shines on a banner of victory over death.
