DAVIE | Alejandro De Santis, a sixth grader from St. Bonaventure School in Davie,  won first place in the fifth annual Archdiocese of Miami Spanish Spelling Bee, held in March at Blessed Trinity School, Miami Springs.

As the first place winner, Alejandro will represent the Archdiocese of Miami at the eighth annual National Spanish Spelling Bee to be held in San Antonio, Texas, July 12-15.

The competition began with 209 students taking a written spelling test. Thirty-three students who scored 85 percent or better then proceeded to the oral competition.

Alejandro's winning word: Haraganería, which means laziness - a word that obviously is not in his vocabulary.
