Sister Mary filled several roles over the years at Mercy Hospital: director of the electrocardiogram department, pastoral care patient visitor and chapel sacristan. In her younger years, she assisted at St. Vincent’s Home for Unwed Mothers in Miami.

Her South Florida roles were part of a 65-year vocation as a Sister of St. Joseph, including a teaching ministry in St. Augustine. Since 2010, she had been a resident of Our Lady of Lourdes Convent, St. Augustine, with a ministry of prayer.

Born in Bari, Italy, and baptized Gaetanella, she was the eighth of nine children born to Dominic and Rose Bitetto Moraglia. Her family eventually moved to South Florida. In 1955, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine and took the name of Sister Mary Immaculate.

The order has served the people of Florida continuously since 1866. Its mission is to foster unity and reconciliation in service of neighbors. Members currently serve not only in St. Augustine but in Miami and Jacksonville, in a variety of ministries.

Due to the pandemic, funeral services for Sister Mary are closed to the public. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Sisters of St. Joseph, P.O. Box 3506, St. Augustine, FL 32085.
