ST. AUGUSTINE | Sister Elizabeth Ann McCormick, a former Miami resident who became general superior for the Sisters of St. Joseph, died recently at Our Lady of Lourdes Convent here. She was 80.

Sister Elizabeth spent more than 62 years as a Sister of St. Joseph, teaching throughout Florida, and served as general superior of the congregation from 1986 to 1994. She also was assistant general superior to Sister Thomas Joseph from 1976 to 1982.

Born in Philadelphia and baptized Margaret Rosalie, she eventually moved to Miami her family. There, she attended St. Mary’s Cathedral School and Notre Dame Academy. Elizabeth Ann was the name she took upon her profession as a Sister of St. Joseph.

During her eight years as general superior, the congregation updated and rewrote their Constitutions, launched the lay associate program that continues today, and held their first gathering of former members.

The Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine have ministered in Florida continuously since 1866. Their mission is to foster unity and reconciliation in service of neighbors. They serve in a variety of ministries in Miami, St. Augustine and Jacksonville.
