MIAMI SHORES | Students at St. Rose of Lima Academy in Short Hills, N.J., learned of the damage wrought by Hurricane Irma in South Florida in early September. They wondered what they could do.
Their principal, Tina Underwood, found a way: She reached out to a sister school, St. Rose of Lima School in Miami Shores, to offer her school's help.
During the storm, the Pre-K playground at the Miami Shores school had been severely damaged and was unusable. After learning this, two New Jersey groups -- the students and the Adolescent Faith Formation group of St. Rose of Lima Church -- raised $1,000 for repairing the playground.
Students of the two schools got to meet Friday, Oct. 13, via Skype, an online videoconferencing application, so that the Miami Shores pupils could voice their gratitude.
As it turned out, the two schools had a direct connection between them. Nicholas and Lukas Arrieta of St. Rose of Lima in Miami Shores have a first cousin who attends St. Rose of Lima Academy in Short Hills.
“It is incredible how we can make a difference in the lives of others,” Principal Underwood said.
