God bless our pets

Traditional blessings mark feast of St. Francis of Assisi

MIAMI | A turtle, rabbits, a goat, chickens, dogs and cats were among the animals blessed at two parishes this weekend to mark the Oct. 4 feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of the environment and animals.

One dog, Angel, almost drank the holy water in the aspersorium (bucket) while waiting. "He was thirsty," said his owner.

Father Christopher Marino, rector of St. Mary Cathedral, blessed animals Sept. 30, 2023, on the plaza in front of the church. At St. Rose of Lima in Miami Shores, Father Angel Calderon blessed animals under the church kiosk.

More parishes will hold blessings on the actual feast day this Wednesday. Check the Community section of the archdiocesan Events Calendar for times and locations.
