MIAMI | Juan Hernandez, St. Brendan High School’s varsity boys basketball coach, knew he had a special group of young men when the season began. Currently they are ranked number 1 in their 4A district, a district that includes Gulliver Prep, Key West, Killian, Immaculata-La Salle and SLAM high schools. The Sabres’ current record of 17-5, puts them in a great position to finish first in the district.
That’s a significant gain from last year’s 14-11 record. “The core group of our players are now juniors, combined with the freshman and sophomores that we currently have in the program makes for a very bright future for St. Brendan boys basketball,” Coach Hernandez said.
The upcoming 4A district tournament, which will be hosted by Sunset High School, will be tough. But team captains Alex Kettle, Santiago Tovar and Nelson Rodriguez, all juniors, have their eyes set on advancing well into the playoffs.
“We are a close-knit group and have been dedicated all season, putting in extra work all year,” Tovar said.
Tovar added that “the toughest team in our district is Killian High School, but we think we can beat them.”
