Father Andrzej 'Andrew' Pietraszko, 50

Spent last years of his priesthood ministering to the sick at Baptist Hospital

MIAMI | It took a while for Father Andrzej “Andrew” Pietraszko to find his special calling. Ordained a priest in 2003 for the Archdiocese of Miami, he served at parishes and as a high school chaplain before discovering his true talent: ministering to the sick.

That’s what he had been doing for the past three years at Baptist Hospital when he died Aug. 27, 2021, after contracting COVID-19.

“In all his assignments I believe he was happiest in his last — as a hospital chaplain,” said Archbishop Thomas Wenski, who spoke with him briefly by phone last Saturday.

“He was in intensive care and spoke with difficulty. I assured him of our prayers. When I tried calling him on Thursday his cell went to voice mail,” the archbishop said.

Msgr. Kenneth Schwanger, who worked with Father Pietraszko for the past 10 years at Our Lady of Lourdes in Kendall, said he covered for the Polish-born priest at one of the parish Masses the first weekend in August.

He said Father Pietraszko had not been feeling well and suspected it might be COVID, but his initial test had been inconclusive. He was waiting for the results of another test when he became seriously ill, about a week-and-a-half ago.

Still, Msgr. Schwanger said, when he saw him Sunday morning, “he looked good.” He thought he might be getting better. “Sunday night his oxygen levels collapsed and today he died.”

As pastor at Our Lady of Lourdes, Msgr. Schwanger had noticed and encouraged Father Pietraszko’s talent for hospital ministry.

“I think that especially here these past 10 years, and going into chaplaincy fulltime, that he found his place. He did very blessed work. It was very good for the people he served and for him,” Msgr. Schwanger said.

Father Pietraszko first came to Our Lady of Lourdes in 2011 as a priest “in residence.” His fulltime assignment was as chaplain at nearby Archbishop Coleman Carroll High School, where he served from August 2011 to July 2013. He stayed at Lourdes as parochial vicar for the next five years, before taking on the chaplaincy at Baptist in November 2018.

Even then, Father Pietraszko continued to celebrate weekend Masses at Lourdes. He also took part in the parish’s monthly healing Masses and other big events. Msgr. Schwanger called it “a beautiful thing” because the work kept the young priest connected to his parish family.

“I thought it was great. The people at Baptist really appreciated him. He seemed to be very happy. I know our people loved that he was there and that he was still here,” Msgr. Schwanger said. “He was very good at ministering to the sick.”

Described by those who knew him as outgoing, people-oriented, gentle, polite and open to different cultures, Father Pietraszko was born Aug. 12, 1971, in Bransk, Poland, to Hanna and Jozef Pietraszko. He was the third of five children, with an older sister and brother and two younger sisters.

Although he felt a calling to the priesthood early on — telling the Florida Catholic at his ordination “my dream is fulfilled” — he moved to Brussels, Belgium, and worked in the garment industry for three years before returning to Poland to enter the seminary in 1991.

He completed two years of study in philosophy and two years of theology at the major seminary in Drohiczyn and the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland, before transferring to Sts. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Michigan, in 1996. He had become convinced, he told his seminary faculty, that “there are too many priests in Poland” and the need was greater in the U.S.

In 1999, he was accepted as a seminarian for the Archdiocese of Miami and entered St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach, where he continued to perfect his English and learned Spanish. In addition to his native Polish, he also was fluent in Russian.

After his ordination on May 10, 2003, he was assigned as parochial vicar at St. Bernadette in Hollywood (2003-04). Subsequent assignments included parochial vicar at St. Louis, Pinecrest (2004-05 and 2005-08); St. Katharine Drexel, Weston (2005); St. Brendan, Miami (2008-09); St. Mary Star of the Sea, Key West (2009); and in residence at St. Mary Magdalen, Sunny Isles Beach (2009-10) and St. Kieran, Miami (2010-11).

“It is sad but in these last couple of weeks, the things that have happened, there’s always signs of grace,” Msgr. Schwanger said. “The Lord had prepared Father Andrew through his ministry, especially to the sick... He didn’t want to die but he was ready.”

Father Pietraszko is survived by his family, who live in Poland and Belgium.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday, Sept. 1, with a viewing at 9 a.m. followed by the funeral Mass at 11 a.m., all at Our Lady of Lourdes, 11291 S.W. 142 Ave., Miami.

Father Andrew was loved by many people and will surely be missed. He loved the Lord deeply and that love came across with fervor in his homilies and depth in communicating his faith to God's children of all ages. May you rest in peace, Father Andrew, and pray for us here on Earth. My family and I thank you for having been such a great inspiration to us all.

Father Andrew was a great person and a wonderful priest. He loved God, our Blessed Mother and country (Poland and USA), and he was not afraid to speak his mind about what he was passionate about. Our family will miss him and his beautiful masses dearly. Whenever we sing the Our Father, we always think of him. Rest In Peace Father Andrew…Heaven gained another Angel.

Father Andrew will be greatly missed. He cared for all. My son has severe autism and other health conditions. He loved him and prayed for him. He was the example who took the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy to heart! My family and friends will miss him very much

May he Rest In Peace. While working with the sick and constantly around people in the church he should have been vaccinated. There are others that have also died in the same parish! A big loss for a community that is always searching for hope and meaning. Please take care of yourselves and eachother.

We are heartbroken! We met Fr. Andrew at St. Augustine Church where he would come to celebrate Mass on weekdays. He was a good and holy priest and a dedicated and compassionate Chaplain. Continued prayers for his soul and for the consolation of his family and friends. It is very sad

My prayer for Father Andrew is that only goodness and mercy follow him all the way to heaven. Before he was ordained, we were friends at our Lady of the Holy Rosary in Cutler Bay (then “Perrine).” He worked at our summer camp there for a short time. Father Andrew was very vocal about many things, and often we did not agree. But we did always agree that Jesus Christ is Lord! In the end, that’s all that really matters. Holy Spirit, thank you for our faithful priests who do the best they can to bring others into salvation and into the truth of our Holy Catholic Church. Be glorified, oh Lord. ✝️⚓️💜

Father Andrew will be greatly missed. He was not afraid of speaking his mind. And I loved the way he always ended Mass by thanking everyone involved in the celebration. He made everyone feel important. May he rest in Peace!

Fr. Andrew was very loved by the faithful. He was a courageous priest who spoke The Truth without compromise. He loved children and was a strong voice for the unborn. Although I feel The Good Shepherd allowed one of His faithful shepherds to be taken from us, I rejoice that he is on his way to his Eternal Reward. In a world that is so concerned with "safety" and where the fear of many grows while their faith diminishes, even among Catholics who witness the Miracle of Miracles at the altar of sacrifice, Father Andrew is a beacon of light. Through his life of service and testimony of true charity, he reminds us that we are called to give our lives for others as Christ did and to save souls. Fr. Andrew witnessed with his own life the words of our Lord: "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it." Luke 9:24 May we follow that example. We will greatly miss you Father. Pray for us.

Fr. Andrew was a caring passionate priest and friend. His Eucharistic celebrations were always reverent and his homilies well prepared. My husband and I were blessed to have Fr. Andrew prepare us for marriage and officiate at our wedding. My children were blessed to watch him grow from Deacon Andrew to Fr. Andrew at St. Katharine Drexel. Our candidates for First Penance at St. Katharine were also blessed to have their First Reconciliation with him the years that he was able to help us out. He was always willing to help us when he could. Fr. Andrew's quick wit and intelligence was one of a kind. I miss you my friend, you will forever be in my heart and prayers.

Fr Andrew was a great, caring person. We were so blessed at Our Lady of Lourdes to have him as part of our family. It was so interesting to hear stories of his childhood in communist Poland. He connected very well to those who escaped communism and oppression in Cuba and Latin America. He was a very faithful man in so many ways. I will always remember…. If he officiated at your Mass, you better participate and sing in full voice giving thanks to God. If he thought we could do better, he would have us would sing again with heart and soul. We learned quickly that when we saw Fr Andrew process down the aisle, we better kick it into gear. :). Great memories. May God bless Father Andrew. We will miss him greatly!

Sad to loose Father Andrew, I met Fr. Andrew during his stay at St. Brendan Church in 2008-09, the last time I saw him it was when my wife were at Baptist Hospital visiting a patient, we spoke with him and he said that was very happy and glad and how he was serving his ministry to God attending the sick. May he rest in peace in of the Lord. Miguel R. Massens

This is very sad news. He was only 50. And by all accounts was a good priest. He seems to have not received the proper medical care after getting infected. He should have been in the hospital and receiving medical treatment. I have very little faith in the “healthcare” community in this country. Rest In Peace Father.

Hanna and Virginia: As a journalist, I obviously had to ask whether he was vaccinated or not. No one could tell me. Therefore I cannot put that information in the story.
Virginia - 08/30/2021 08:35 AM
Hanna Smerek: No, you are not entitled to other people's medical history!
Hanna Smerek - 08/29/2021 07:57 PM
This article misses THE MOST IMPORTANT information. Was he or was he not vaccinated against COVID.
Carmen H. Valencia - 08/28/2021 04:37 PM
I have been very blessed to meet and work with Fr. Andrew. A noble human being, with a great heart, always ready to help others, care for the sick and needy has been the most important thing for him. It will be very difficult not to miss him, he conveyed good humor, joy, always willing to serve others. I will miss his advice, his spirituality and devotion to the Virgin Mary, his deep homilies full of love to Jesus, fervent defender of life. Father Andrew thank you for giving and giving me so much. Rest in peace.
