Hospitaller Brother Raphael (Michael) Mieszala, 80, who served at Camillus House in Miami from 1997 to 2003 and again from 2006 to 2019, died Oct. 13, 2023. Born March 25, 1943, he entered religious life Oct. 6, 1971, professed first vows May 28, 1972, and solemn vows Feb. 27, 1977. Brother Raphael was also an ordained priest, attorney, and registered nurse. In addition to Camillus House, he served at Good Shepherd Manor in Momence, Illinois; Good Shepherd Center and Good Shepherd Manor in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Good Shepherd Manor in Kansas City, Missouri; Sheepfold of the Good Shepherd in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; and finally at St. John of God Community Services, Westville Grove, New Jersey. His funeral Mass and internment of ashes will be at Villa Mathias, Albuquerque.

Hospitaller Brother Mateo Fenza, 77, worked at Camillus House for the past nine years but had left recently for health reasons.
Hospitaller Brother Mateo Fenza, 77, who served at Camillus House in Miami for the past nine years, died Oct. 3, 2023 after a short illness. He professed solemn vows Oct. 4, 1987, and also served the poor and forgotten at St. John’s Hospice, Philadelphia; Good Shepherd Center, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Good Shepherd Centre, Hamilton, Ontario; and Cardinal Manning House of Prayer, Los Angeles.His funeral Mass and internment of ashes took place at Villa Mathias, Albuquerque. “Brother Mateo departed this life just as he lived it – praying,” said the obituary posted at salazarfunerals.com.
“Raphael has been a major figure not only at our ministries here in Miami, but also in the archdiocese with helping priest coverage in parishes and covering for sacramentals at the local hospitals,” wrote Hospitaller Brother Gary Hill, prior of the Miami community and vice president of Mission Integration at Camillus, in a message to Archbishop Thomas Wenski. “Both Brothers will be greatly missed not only here in Miami but with the Brothers.”
Deacon Jesus Tosco, 89, died Sept. 25, 2023. Ordained for the Archdiocese of Miami in 1986, he served in the ministry to the bereaved, at St. Cecilia and San Lazaro in Hialeah, St. Mary Magdalene in Sunny Isles Beach, and St. Boniface in Pembroke Pines until his retirement in 2015. Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 6 at St. Cecilia.
Louis Amiclé Laurent, 101, father of Mercy Hospital chaplain Father J. Sterling Laurent, died Oct. 9, 2023. Funeral Mass was set for Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church, North Lauderdale, followed by burial at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Condolences may be sent care of St. Kieran Church, 3605 S. Miami Ave., Miami.
Adrian Dominican Sister Joan Marconi, 89 and in her 73rd year of religious profession, died Sept. 14, 2023. She taught at St. Thomas Aquinas High School (1967-75), worked as an occupational therapist at St. John’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fort Lauderdale (1981-87), and chaired the Occupational Therapy Department at Barry University, Miami Shores (1992-95). Funeral Mass and burial took place Sept. 20 at the motherhouse, 1257 E. Siena Heights, Adrian, Michigan, where memorial gifts may be sent.
Lombardo Dauria, 76, father of Capuchin Brother Lombardo Dauria, new superior of the Miami community, died Sept. 18, 2023. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Divine Providence, Miami, followed by burial at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, Doral.
