SOUTHWEST RANCHES | Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy High School has named Dino Mangiero, a former NFL player, as its new head football coach and director of football operations. He succeeds Byron Walker, who is retiring from coaching after 11 seasons at McCarthy and a 46-year career in South Florida.

“As principal of Archbishop McCarthy High School, and on behalf of our Maverick family, I want to thank Coach Walker for his dedication and work ethic as our football head coach. Coach Walker is a man of high morals and standards, and will continue in his role as director of athletics,” said Richard Jean, principal of Archbishop McCarthy High.

Mangiero has established himself as one of the most highly regarded and well networked high school football coaches in the country. He brings a unique mentoring approach to coaching high school football, NFL experience, and experience as a former assistant coach at Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, and former director of football operations at the University of Indiana

A successful student athlete at Curtis High School, a public high school in Staten Island, New York, Mangiero received a full athletic scholarship to Rutgers University and was selected All American his senior year. In 1980, he was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as a defensive lineman. He also played for the Seattle Seahawks, spending a total of six seasons in the NFL.

From 2016 to 2021, Mangiero served as head coach at Mater Dei Prep in Middletown, New Jersey, where the team won a state championship in 2016 and were state finalists in 2017 and 2019.

Prior to his appointment at Mater Dei, Mangiero was on the faculty at Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn, New York, for 16 years. As head football coach and director of football operations, his teams at Poly Prep won 52 of 53 games played in one stretch. Poly Prep was also ranked in the USA Today Top 10 high school football programs nationally for two consecutive seasons.

Mangiero also coached former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores during his high school career in Brooklyn, New York, and served as a mentor for Flores throughout his college and professional career.

Walker is the winningest coach in Archbishop McCarthy’s history. He spent a total of 46 years on the sidelines, 45 of those as head coach at Glades Day, American Heritage (Plantation), and McCarthy high schools. His overall record is 319 wins and 179 loses, with eight state championship appearances and three state titles.

In 2018, Coach Walker was inducted into the Palm Beach County Hall of Fame. His 11-year tenure at McCarthy also featured back-to-back Gold Coast Conference championships.

“We believe by creating a football culture and environment that encourages young men to succeed on the field, in the classroom and in life, our new initiatives will further secure Archbishop McCarthy High School as a leader in coaching, sportsmanship, teamwork, facility, and community relations,” Principal Jean said. “Finally, we believe more elite colleges and universities will come to recognize the McCarthy football program and academic program, and will look to recruit our student athletes — a benefit to our entire community.”
