Msgr. Pace High wins two district championships in one night

MIAMI GARDENS | Msgr. Edward Pace High School athletes have excelled at a number of sports this year, winning district championships in baseball, volleyball, girls basketball and flag football, and achieving a nationwide ranking in cheerleading.

The baseball team won their 35th district championship May 4, 2023, by beating the City of Hialeah Educational Academy 5-1. The team is led by head coach, Pace athletic director and class of 1985 alumnus Thomas Duffin.

On the same day, the boys volleyball team won their district championship versus McCarthur in a 3-set sweep. It was the team’s first district championship since 2006 and head coach Kelli Kosydor, who also coaches the girls volleyball and beach volleyball teams at Pace, was ecstatic.

“I am extremely proud of the Pace boys volleyball team for their hard work, dedication, and success this year,” she said. “We began our season with people doubting us, assuming our season wouldn’t be as strong due to us losing a strong 2022 senior class. Our 2023 seniors stepped up and led the team from the beginning.”

The team ended the season with a 12-7 record only dropping games to teams ranked top 20 in the state.

“We proved to everyone that we deserved to be in the top 20 as well with our hard work and beating good teams,” Kosydor said. “Winning a district championship was a goal we set as a team early on and we achieved that goal.”

She thanked the team’s six seniors “for being mentors, leaders, and hard workers each and every day.”

The flag football team also won the district championship the week prior to baseball and volleyball.

The girls basketball team were district champs earlier this year.

The track and field program qualified eight members to the state championships in Jacksonville.

And the cheerleading team is ranked eighth in the nation and were state champions in 2022.

Pace High will be hosting summer camps for children ages 4 and up. Visit www.pacehs.com for more information.
