Lent begins

MIAMI | Archbishop Thomas Wenski celebrated two Masses for Ash Wednesday this year: One early in the morning at the U.S. Coast Guard station on Miami Beach, and the other at noon at Gesu Church in downtown Miami.

The March 2 Masses marked the beginning of the holy season of Lent, leading up to Holy Week and Easter.

Many parishes are hosting missions, celebrating additional Masses and holding special events to mark this Lent. Go to our Events Calendar to find a listing.

When the parishes send them to us, the Communications Office also will post the Triduum and Easter schedules under each parish listing (click on PARISHES | PRIESTS | SCHOOLS | MASSES at the top of this page to find the list.)

Corrected: To reflect the correct location of the Coast Guard station - Miami Beach, not Brickell Avenue in Miami; and, in the photo captions, Father Roberto Cid's role. He is director of the Apostolate of the Seas at the Port of Miami, not part-time chaplain to the Coast Guard.
