Dr. Jim Rigg has been appointed Cabinet Secretary of Education and Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Miami. He will begin the job on July 6, 2021.

Dr. Rigg comes to the Archdiocese of Miami from the Archdiocese of Chicago where he served as Superintendent of Schools under Cardinal Blase J. Cupich for the past six years. Previously, Dr. Rigg served as Director of Education and Superintendent of Schools in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati overseeing the Office of Catechesis as well as Office of Schools, in an organizational structure similar to the Archdiocese of Miami.

As Cabinet Secretary of Education and Superintendent of Schools in Miami, Dr. Rigg will head a veteran leadership team as he guides our 57 Catholic schools, including its Virtual School, across the archdiocese which encompasses three counties, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe. Prior to Dr. Rigg’s role as superintendent in two archdioceses, he served Catholic schools in Tennessee and Colorado as a teacher, dean, principal, assistant superintendent, and college-seminary lecturer.

Throughout his career, Dr. Rigg has acquired substantial professional experience that has prepared him well to lead the Archdiocese’s system of Catholic schools, and he brings skills in the following areas to this role: church governance and funding models, community outreach to build a unified vision for Catholic education, legislative advocacy with a focus on parental choice programs, and most importantly, an unwavering enthusiasm and passion for the role Catholic schools can play in the renewal of our Church today.

In accepting the appointment, Dr. Rigg shared: "I am sincerely honored and thrilled to serve as the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Superintendent for the Archdiocese of Miami. During my brief experiences in the Archdiocese, I have been deeply impressed by the quality and vibrancy of the Catholic schools, and the commitment of school families, employees, and supporters. The Archdiocese is a great place for Catholic education.”

During the search process Dr. Kim Pryzbylski shared her confidence that Dr. Rigg’s experience as a strong Catholic school superintendent will build on the good work that has been accomplished, noting the talent of our principals who lead schools demonstrating a vibrant Catholic identity and notable academic excellence.

A search committee comprised of pastors, a former principal, parents and others, worked with Partners in Mission School Leadership Search Solutions to select Dr. Rigg from among a highly qualified group of individuals seeking to serve in Miami. Sister Elizabeth Worley SSJ, Chair of the search committee, noted that the leadership accomplished by Dr. Kim Pryzbylski during her tenure has contributed to the vitality of the Archdiocesan schools, making this opportunity of service very attractive to the group of highly qualified applicants.

The Archdiocese of Miami is pleased to welcome Dr. Jim Rigg as our next Cabinet Secretary of Education and Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Miami beginning July 6, 2021. Dr. Rigg and his family will be transitioning to South Florida early this summer.
