MIAMI | Florida State University has accepted 38 St. Brendan High School seniors for the fall semester of 2016. The students are all actively involved in extracurricular activities including honor societies, clubs, athletics, and community service. FSU received over 35,000 applications for freshmen this year from around the U.S. and other countries. “It is an honor to have such a significant number of our St. Brendan students accepted into one of Florida’s top public universities,” said Jennifer Mendez, St. Brendan’s college advisor.
Another senior, Maria Mercado, has been recognized by the City of Doral for her work in an Educities Project. Maria created this project, whose motto is “Educate children, change the world,” to provide free tutoring to students in grades 11 and 12 to help them prepare for the SAT/ACT.
This project also offers free workshops in Spanish for parents, to guide them through the college admission process.
Doral’s vice mayor, Christi Fraga, an alumna of St. Brendan, presented Maria with her certificate at the April council meeting.
Correction: The original caption in the Maria Mercado photo named the wrong person. It is Doral Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz, not Maria Mercado's mother.
