FORT LAUDERDALE | In an attempt to make students aware of the different situations of oppression and abuse in other countries around the world, Cardinal Gibbons theology teacher Nelson Araque asked students who were born in or have relatives in Venezuela to lead the intercessions for the Ash Wednesday prayer service at the high school.

Araque found 20 students who fit this category, and they planned the event. During the prayer service, these students who are directly touched by the protests in their country gathered around the ambo and some of them read the intercessions in English or Spanish.

Amanda Lambert, a senior, prayed for a change in our lives as a sign of reconciliation.

Sophomores Emi Lauria and Andreina Martinez prayed for those who govern nations, that they might seek a path of justice in all their decisions.

Daniella Garcia-Padron, a junior, prayed with freshman Corina Azpurua for the Piarist students, teachers, and religious, especially in Venezuela, that they might be assured of the prayers of all the other students from the Piarist schools around the world.

At the same time, a large video screen displayed the names of the Piarist priests and brothers currently serving in Venezuela.

Seniors Nicholas Ketchum and Camille Chambliss prayed for all victims of oppression and abuse, that they might find strength and courage to continue to advocate for their rights.
