LAUDERDALE LAKES | Villa Maria Nursing Center in North Miami was recently recognized by the American Health Care Association for achieving all four goals in the AHCA Quality Initiative Recognition Program an achievement that can be claimed by no other nursing center in Florida and only 68 of the 9,000 nursing centers nationwide.

The recognition program honors those nursing homes that achieved one to four goals that are designed to improve the quality of care in Americas skilled nursing centers. The goals are:
  1. Safely reduce by 15 percent the number of hospital readmissions within 30 days of a nursing home stay
  2. Reduce by 15 percent the turnover in nursing staff
  3. Increase by up to 90 percent the number of customers who would recommend the facility to others
  4. Safely reduce the off-label use of antipsychotic drugs by 15 percent.
One other Catholic Health Services facility, St. Johns Nursing Center in Fort Lauderdale, attained Tier III recognition. Only five percent of nursing homes nationwide achieved this honor, and only 16 in Florida.

St. Annes Nursing Center in Miami and Villa Maria West Skilled Nursing Center in Hialeah Gardens received Tier II recognition, an honor achieved by only 21 percent of nursing homes nationwide.

The honors were announced at the AHCA Quality Symposium held in New Orleans Feb. 10-12. As a Tier IV recipient, Villa Maria Nursing Center also is featured in the February 2014 edition of Provider magazine.

The American Health Care Association is a non-profit federation of affiliate state health organizations, together representing more than 12,000 non-profit and for-profit nursing centers, assisted living, developmentally disabled and sub-acute care providers.

Catholic Health Services is a ministry of the Archdiocese of Miami and the largest post-acute provider in the southeast United States. CHS operates 30 facilities in Broward and Miami-Dade counties that serve more than 6,000 people daily, with over 7,500 new patients per year.
