CORAL GABLES | It was quite a surprise that will last a lifetime for an Archbishop Coleman Carroll High School senior.Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade called Nicole Muxo, 17, while she attended her senior prom. The surprising call was played over a loudspeaker so that everyone in the packed La Jolla Ballroom could hear it. Wade thanked Nicole for her invitation to the prom, but followed up with a bigger surprise.
I had no idea he was here, said Nicole as she reacted with amazement when Wade entered the ballroom from the lobby, carrying a bouquet of flowers. Everyone was stunned. Wade hugged Nicole and they danced to the music of Michael Jacksons Dont Stop Till You Get Enough as the happy crowd that surrounded them made room for the pair to move around.
The event attracted camera crews from local television stations, and it all came about through Nicoles persistence. She created a promposal YouTube video in which she wore a #3 Wade jersey and spelled out the word prom on five different basketballs set to the music of Kanye Wests The Glory. This was not her first try at attracting the NBA superstar to a school event. She had asked him to her junior and senior homecoming dances. Nicole said she chose Wade because he is her favorite Heat player and a positive role model.
She never gave up, said Wade. It was so cool to see her reaction. She asked once, twice, three times. I think this is a special young lady. When she wants something shell get it. Shell make some guy very lucky and this is the lucky guy, me, tonight. Its an honor to be here.
Wade acknowledged Nicoles actual date, Laurent Chaumin and later posed for photos with him and Nicole in the lobby. The first to learn about the Wade visit were Carroll High administrators.
We learned about the visit at around noon time, said Carmelite Sister Rosalie Nagy, the high schools principal. At first, he said that most likely he wouldnt be able to attend. Nicole was resolved to his not coming.
The Heat are in the middle of a break from the playoffs and Wade has been nursing a sore knee, so he had some spare time and a chance to make a dream come true for Nicole and her family, who are huge Heat fans. Paul and Adela Muxo, Nicoles mother and father, learned about Wades visit about 8 p.m. while they were having dinner. They rushed over to La Jolla Ballroom for Wades 9:30 p.m. expected arrival, but first they called their other daughter, Melissa Muxo, 19.
I was on my way to a friends house in Kendall, said Muxo, dressed in black shorts and a black tank top. I guess Im dressed super-casually for a prom.
She did not want her sister to see her and suspect that something was going on so she hid behind a nearby bush while prom-goers dressed to the nines proceeded into the ballroom. Some of the female prom-goers sported masks in keeping with the prom theme, Phantom of the Opera Unmasked.
Even the television media parked their live trucks around the corner from the ballroom so as not to attract attention until the prom-goers were seated inside and a table with jerseys and basketballs was set up in the lobby for Wade to sign autographs.
After the event, he tweeted: I had a blast at Prom w @nicole_muxo... Never be 2 scared to ask.. They might just say yes...#dreamsdocometrue
