NORTH MIAMI The North Miami Marian Council 3757 of the Knights of Columbus and Johnson and Wales University teamed up May 3 to host a benefit dinner for the Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart) Hospital in Haiti.

The hospital, whose slogan is that saves lives and changes lives every day, has provided uninterrupted service for the last 25 years, and is the largest private hospital in northern Haiti, with 120 beds. Consistent with the ideals of the Papal Order of Malta, the hospital provides quality healthcare to the sick and the poor in the Hatian community. It also serves as an educational center for many who provide healthcare in Haiti.

The hospital is run by the CRUDEM Foundation, which was originally founded in 1968 by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Today, the foundation has complete operating, fiscal, and managerial responsibility for the hospital. In 2010, the hospital rose to prominence as a main treatment center following the devastating earthquake that hit the island.

This is the second year that the Knights of Columbus and Johnson and Wales University team up for this benefit dinner, all of whose proceeds go to the hospital. The dinner has raised approximately $10,000 each year.

For the Knights, this event provides an opportunity for members of the community and for county and municipal leaders to show their support and appreciation for the hospital. For the students of Johnson & Wales Universitys Culinary Arts program, the dinner has become the final project for the graduating seniors.
