MIAMI St. John Neumann School's advanced eighth-grade science students won third place out of 38 teams at the National Engineers Regional competition recently held at Florida International University. The team also won a special award for "Best Use of Historical and Cultural Resources."
To win, the students collaborated and worked after school for many weeks to design and build a sustainable city of the future with an emphasis on providing a comfortable living environment as well as a medical facility and innovative cure for its citizens and visitors with leukemia. The competition included development of the city using Sim City software, accompanied by an abstract and essay detailing the plans for the city, and finally building the city to scale and presenting it at the competition. The presenters were Amanda Bello, Alexandra Daly, and Gabriel Seiglie.
