MIAMI - Students from Archbishop Coleman Carroll High School's National Honor Society, along with members of the Theology Honor Society, went on a field trip to St. Mary Cathedral School Dec. 13 to celebrate Christmas with the students of PreK-3 through second grade.
The high school students visited the classrooms and spent a few hours reading, coloring and practicing for the St. Mary's Christmas pageant with the younger students. Two of the boys from Carroll High, Zachary Estela and Eli Monzon, dressed up as Santa Claus and a helpful elf to the delight of the little kids, who enthusiastically greeted "Santa" in the cafeteria with hugs and waves. Santa and his elf then visited the classrooms of the pre-kindergarten students to hand out treat bags and ask every child what he or she wanted for Christmas. Some of the young children shed tears as the high school students departed.
"This special day between the students of Archbishop Carroll and St. Mary's Cathedral School has been taking place for the last 10 years," said Maria Cardenas, teacher and moderator of the high school's National Honor Society. "As a member of NHS when I attended (Carroll High), I always felt that that was one of the best field trips I ever took, and when I became a teacher and the NHS moderator myself, I knew that I had to continue that special tradition. Our students love visiting St. Mary's because they feel that giving their time to the young children really brings out the meaning of Christmas for everyone."
