MIAMI Camillus House staff and scores of volunteers will celebrate Thanksgiving Day by serving a traditional holiday dinner to hundreds of persons who are homeless and poor on Thursday, Nov. 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Camillus House, 726 N.E. First Avenue.

Because of the anticipated high turnout, the meal of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls and desserts will be served outside the facility, under an outdoor tent along N.E. Eighth Street.

Ocean Bank, a long-time supporter of Camillus House and the mission of the Brothers of the Good Shepherd, is sponsoring the Thanksgiving celebration for the 12th consecutive year. Their support has made it possible for Camillus House to provide thousands of traditional Thanksgiving meals to individuals who are poor and homeless in the community.

Camillus Houses chefs will bring nearly 125 turkeys to the Hyatt Regency in downtown Miami for roasting, since the Camillus facilities are too small to accommodate the large number of turkeys needed.

More than 160 volunteers will help prepare and serve this traditional Thanksgiving feast. On Thursday morning, volunteers will help set the tablecloths and centerpieces before the meal is served.

Camillus House serves more than 1,500 meals a day. It provided more than 600,000 free, hot meals in 2008. The facility, established by the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd in 1960, has provided humanitarian services to persons who are poor and homeless in Miami-Dade County for 48 years. During that time, Camillus House has grown steadily from a small overnight shelter into a full-service center for persons who are poor and homeless.
