MIAMI| Students from St. Brendan High School’s Medical Sciences Academy got hands-on lessons in their field of study when they visited Barry University’s School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences Nov. 23.
The 32 St. Brendan students participated in hands-on activities in four disciplines: athletic training, biomechanics, kinesiology and sports psychology. Barry University's Sue Shapiro, associate professor of athletic training and clinical coordinator, and Jessica Nurquez, clinical instructor in athletic training, allocated time for students to determine signs of concussion using balance tests. They also learned how muscle strength and movement is assessed, as well as experienced, hands on, the types of tests that are done in sports psychology.
“It opened my eyes to the field of athletic training, something I really had no knowledge of before,” said sophomore Katia Sierra.
According to Vicky Chacon, the Medical Academy director at St. Brendan, “It was a very successful trip exposing our students to careers in the medical sciences besides physicians and nurses.”
