MIAMI GARDENS | Msgr. Edward Pace High School's varsity baseball team won the Class 5A District 15 championship and extended its winning streak to 19 with a 5-4 victory over Mater Lakes Academy April 20.
The Spartan streak has been fueled by excellent pitching and hitting.
The game started off with junior Nick Fusco pitching 3 ⅓ innings and junior Manuel Rodriguez closing out the game. Shortstop Jorge Arenas put the Spartans on the scoreboard with a 2-RBI single followed by first baseman Jonathan Ledesma and right fielder Bryan Diaz each hitting single-RBI doubles.
“We played great overall as a team,” said catcher Jose Torres. “It was a truly great ball game. We are going to keep on batting in hopes of making it to the state championship.”
The Spartans went on to win their 20th game April 27 with a 2-1 victory over Key West High School. They will play Gulliver High School in the regional semifinal May 4 at the Pace baseball field.
“It's been two years since we have been in this position and it's good to get the district championship back to Pace,” said head coach Tom Duffin. “We know that there is going to be a very tough road ahead of us in regionals on our quest to the state championships, but we are very excited and up for the challenge."
