MIAMI | Giving time, sharing talents, learning selflessness, and showing God’s love for others are all part of the curriculum this year at Mother of Our Redeemer School.
In keeping with the Year of Mercy/Works of Mercy theme, several “projects of love” already have taught the students to be followers of God not just in faith, but in the ways they live their lives.
On Oct. 22, eighth grade students walked in the Step Out for Diabetes 5K to support finding a cure for this widespread disease. They walked side-by-side with many who have diabetes and whose families are affected by it. Later in the month, students of all grades participated in a Family Fun Day fundraiser for Crohn’s disease and colitis. They sold refreshments and participated in a school walk.
In-school projects also imparted lessons in selflessness. As part of a “flour babies” project, eighth-grade students had to carry around their "babies" made from a 5 lb. bag of flour through an entire week of classes and activities. Students kept a record of feeding and changing times in their "children’s" baby books. They also had to create a birth certificate and write a report on their week’s experience of caring for their babies.
"We feel it is our mission to instill these acts of love at a young age because it is our studentss who will go forward to do great things for others," said Principal Ana Casariego.
