McCarthy's Mavericks win in baseball, volleyball

Teams headed to regional, state championship games

Members of Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School's volleyball team will begin playing for the state championship May 6 at Golden Gate High School in Naples.

SOUTHWEST RANCHES | Continuing their winning ways, Archbishop Edward McCarthy High School's volleyball and baseball teams are making a run for their respective championships.

The boys' volleyball team will be playing in the state tournament starting Friday, May 6, at Golden Gate High School in Naples. The team defeated Pine Crest May 3 by scores of 25-22, 25-23, and 25-17. Offensively, Nicky Grossman scored 14 points, 2 aces, and  30 digs; Michael Moreiras scored 12 points, 2 aces, and 17 digs; and Ozzie Fernandez had 12 points, 2 aces, and 8 kills for the 26-2 Mavericks.

The baseball team also defeated American Heritage May 3 by a score of 4-3 behind the pitching of Yordani Carmona, Austin Genao, and Joe Perez. Kobe Lopez, Alex Toral and Joe Perez hit homeruns for the Mavericks and Kobe and Jake Holland had 2 hits each.

The win propels the Mavericks to a state record ninth consecutive regional championship game, with a record of 26 wins and 2 losses. The game will take place Tuesday, May 10.
