MIAMI | Belen Jesuit Preps crew team had its best performance ever at the Scholastic National Regatta held in Princeton, N.J., May 23-24, securing two national championships along with two gold and two silver medals.

For the first time in the schools history, eight Belen Jesuit boats, consisting of 42 Belen rowers, qualified to compete in the lightweight category. The winning crews were:
  • Gold medal, Varsity 2x: Joey Armengol and Hector Formoso
  • Gold medal, Varsity 4+: Joseph Perez, Daniel Brennan, Christian Burke, Alejandro Seda and cox Fernando Pinera
  • Silver medal, Varsity 4x: Nicholas Thompson, Nicolas Waterhouse, Alex Vidal and Joseph Garcia
  • Silver medal, Varsity 8+: Nicolas Fernandez, Daniel Ugas, Nick Keenan, Alec Keenan, Andres Fernandez, Ben Gilbert, Joseph Menendez, Manny Sanchez and cox Miguel Zaldivar.
The Scholastic Rowing Association of America first established this regatta in 1935, and has since hosted the annual national championship, inviting qualifying crews from all over the country to compete.

The teams chaplain, Jesuit Father Ernesto Fernandez-Travieso, traveled with the athletes and provided spiritual support by celebrating a special Mass for the team on Friday evening.

Our rowers enjoyed the opportunity to interact and compete with other Jesuit crews from around the country, said coach Yunian Cabrera.

Belens crews now head to the last regatta of the season, the US Rowing Youth National Championship in Sacramento, Calif., June 13-15.
